Weekend Relaxation - SPA Vingruma Klubs
Not every Latvian summer day is above thirty degrees, and not every day off do you feel like heading out on a trip or a hike along nature trails - on those days there are options right here in central Riga. A small but clean and cosy spa complex at Vingruma Klubs on Elijas iela 17, which we visited one overcast Saturday afternoon.
It had been a good while since I managed to get a massage, and the tension with its unpleasant tingling in the shoulders, neck and lower back from constant daily work at the computer was making itself felt. A visit to a sauna and a bubbling bath was exactly what was needed.
The spa complex is fairly small, with three types of sauna - a dry sauna with relaxing sounds of water and forest birdsong, a steam room, and a traditional Latvian wooden sauna with a stove, a bucket for pouring water over the stones, and birch branches. Three pools as well - a large one with a cascade, a cold plunge pool and a jacuzzi. There is also the option to rub oneself with crushed ice.
At the same time there were seven visitors, which seemed a fairly optimal number to avoid too much crowding. Free towels were available at reception, but slippers, caps, lotions and other hygiene and cosmetics items you had to bring yourself - which we hadn't really known. In the complex itself a carafe of water with glasses was available for refreshment after heating up in the sauna.
A very positive point is that unlike other Riga spas, there is free parking in a large enclosed area here. On arrival you take a token which you then unlock at the club reception. If desired, with prior booking you can choose an additional treatment, massage or sauna ritual led by a professional (more information at www.vingrumaklubs.lv). I had initially planned to do that, but the masseuse service I'd tried previously wasn't available that day. However, I received a rather good massage from the underwater jets right there in the jacuzzi, and the stiffness was gone.
I recommend dropping in!
