I'm Leaving from Latgale - Borowa MC

Genuine joy that young people have preserved simplicity and been able to reflect their thoughts, feelings, and experiences so talentedly - both in original poetry and music, and in a successful arrangement of a familiar Latgalian folk song. Hats off!

A certain pride and pang always overtakes me when I hear the songs of the Borowiešu in the Latgalian language. Since 1995, having practically lived in Riga and returning home to Latgale only for holidays and a few days off, where the state language in everyday communication - at the post office, in shops, at the market and so on - is practically not used, it is so close and yet so unfamiliar to an outsider's ear.

Genuine joy that young people have preserved simplicity and been able to reflect their thoughts, feelings, and experiences so talentedly - both in original poetry and music, and in a successful arrangement of a familiar Latgalian folk song. Hats off!

About the group -

Borowa MC - a music group that gained recognition in 2005 with an arrangement of the Latgalian folk song "Vysskaistuokajai meitiņai" (To the Most Beautiful Girl), distinguished by singing in the Latgalian language. In 2005 the group received three Latvian Music Recording Awards of the Year.

The group was founded in 2004 by three friends from Malta Parish in Rēzekne District - Aigars Runčis, Agris Barovskis, and Guntis Šmaukstelis. A discovery for me - "Borowa" is apparently the ancient name for Malta, while "MC" means "mūžīgi ceļā" (forever on the road). Initially the group's activity was not serious; they performed at various events in their district until they were noticed after winning the Baltinava Music Festival "Osvalds". Already in the group's first year of activity Šmaukstelis left.

At the beginning of 2005 "Borowa MC" performed at the closing of the 2004 Latvian Music Recording Awards ceremony with the song "Latgaļu party", which is considered a turning point in the group's development. After this concert "Borowa MC" signed a contract with Mikrofons Records for the release of a debut album. When work on the album began, Barovskis left the group, leaving only the vocalist and leader Aigars Runčis. During 2005 the group was joined by singer Guntra Kuzmina and guitarist Ingars Gusāns. With Gusāns's arrival, the group's musical style changed, incorporating rock music elements alongside rap.

In summer 2005 the "Borowa MC" song "Vysskaistuokajau meitiņai" entered the Radio SWH programme "Priekšnams", in which new groups compete, and was recognised with first place. In autumn the song was included in the Radio SWH Top 40 rotation, unexpectedly reaching 2nd place. In November 2005 the group's debut album "Trepis iz Nakurīni" was released.

"Borowa MC" reached the peak of their popularity at the beginning of 2006, when in January "Vysskaistuokajau meitiņai" was recognised as the most popular song of 2005 at both Radio SWH and Latvijas Radio 2 "Mūzikas banka", surpassing the Prāta Vētra song "Četri krasti" in both charts. In February at the 2005 Latvian Music Recording Awards ceremony, Borowa MC received three awards: for best debut, best hip hop album, and best hip hop song.

In the first half of 2006 the "Borowa MC" songs "Maņ navajag" (together with Mārtiņš Freimanis) and "I kod līsmeņa soak dzist" achieved success on radio stations. In summer vocalist Guntra Kuzmina left the group, leaving only Runčis and Gusāns. In autumn 2006 the group's first music video was made for the song "Siļva" (Silva).

At the beginning of 2007 Borowa MC released their newest song "Madelka", in which Aina Poiša also participated. At the beginning of the year vocalist Leila Alijeva joined the group as a guest artist. At the Latvian Music Recording Awards 2006 ceremony the group presented their next song "Pi Dīveņa gari goldi". In May 2007 Borowa MC's second album "Plastilina pasaule" (Plasticine World) was released.

At the end of October 2008 Borowa MC released their third album "Ui, lobs!" (Oh, Good!).

Listen to / watch the group's melodic song "Silva" (see below). My association - pure country nostalgia from back in the day.

(Song lyrics in Latgalian dialect)

Nu reita pasamūstu dzeivūklī,
Kurā tukšuos sīnys uzrunoj mani.
Radzu vītu tukšu blokus sev...
Kur šūnakt otkon beji tu?

Ustobys styurī uzpeits ziernekļa teikls..
Iz palūdzis puče nūkoltuse aug..
Atsaceru, ka tei sen laisteita nav!

Pa aizskaru škierbu
Saule ustobā gaismu sovu mat..
Putekli nu greidys pasaceļ, kreit.

Īslāgts televizors prīkšā
Attālus maina..
Tik īrosta aina..

Pruotā dažaidi trūkšni,
Sirdī nūjauta, kas klīdz :
„Tu zaudejs esi jū!"
Grybu praseit – par kū,
Tikai vuordu vītā skaņa,
Kas kai uorpruoteiguo saucīns
Izskaņ apkuortejā klusumā.

Īeju vannā.
Nu krana iudiņs luosis piļ...

Kotrā luosī tovu apspulgu es skotu!
Palīku rūkys zam strūklys,
Lai pa saujom tevi izlītu sev prīkšā..

Tikai iudiņs plaukstā solts
Man munu apspulgu ruoda..

Līkās, ka tu mani aiz mugurys sauc..
Nā, tikai izalykuos..
Tu esi pazuduse!
Tu esi pazuduse, prūm!

Silva – es saucu tevi klusumā,
Pylna – dzeive malu i tukšuma.
Silva – tevi sātā gaida kačs,
Silva, Silva..
Virtuvē solta kopeja krūzē.
Malna kai mali,
Kū stuosteji tu maņ.
Izguožu es škidrumu.

Iz goldauta bolta..
Malns traips izaveidoj,
Apjam jis bildi,
Kas golda golā stuov..

Pajamu rūkā i nūgluostu tū..
Divi laimeigi cylvāki
Nu bildis manī verās,
Ar pierkstu golim pīsaskoru vaigam
Tavam maigi...

Varbyut pazvaneit i pasceit,
Ka pīdūdu es tev,
Grybu dzierdēt tikai : „Caw!"
Sajust tevi blokus sev..

Tikai aizjimts numurs tev...
Žāl, bet es gribieju...

Silva – es saucu tevi klusumā,
Pylna – dzeive malu i tukšuma.
Silva – tevi sātā gaida kačs,
Silva, Silva..

Dzeivē citreiz šys tys mainuos,
Suocas nu jauna,
Kaut kas pazyud, bet
Cyts otkon nu gola vysu suoc...
I skaņa!
