Portugal Part 3 - Cabo da Roca
This certifies that you have visited Cabo da Roca, in the district of Sintra, Portugal, the westernmost point of the European continent, the very edge of the world, "where the land ends and the sea begins," where the spirit of faith, love and adventure urged the Portuguese caravels to set sail in search of the New World.
October 2008
On the morning of a sunny day from the resort town of Estoril we took the local bus (2.75 EUR per person one way) to Cabo da Roca - Europe's westernmost point -
38°47 N, 9°30 W

Arriving there, one truly had to agree with the words of the Portuguese poet Camões, which are also immortalised in stone at the top of the 140 m cliff - where the land ends and the sea begins ...

As proof of having stood at the edge of the world, a certificate can be purchased right there at the tourist centre for 10 EUR, which reads in 8 languages - "This certifies that you have visited Cabo da Roca, in the district of Sintra, Portugal, the westernmost point of the European continent, the very edge of the world, 'where the land ends and the sea begins,' where the spirit of faith, love and adventure urged the Portuguese caravels to set sail in search of the New World."
