Back to Roots in Čiekurkalns
This Sunday, at the Čiekurkalns crossroads, under the care of the Čiekurkalns Development Society, the eighth harvest festival is taking place with the traditional homemade goods market and a historical tour of the neighbourhood.
This time there was a field kitchen provided by the National Armed Forces, which treated festival visitors to plov and sweet tea. Also new to us was the opportunity in Čiekurkalns to converse in the Latgalian tongue and to try Latgale barrel pickles and Live Latgale Kvass from rye bread.
Children could ride in a horse-drawn carriage, play various outdoor and board games, bounce in inflatable attractions, and snack on sweets. Adults, meanwhile, had the opportunity to purchase smoked fish, cured bacon, homemade pasta and wines, linen and wooden crafts, potted hot pepper plants, and other things pleasing to the eye and stomach.
At the society's tent, Čiekurkalns in old photographs was on display, as well as the opportunity to sign up for a photo orienteering contest through present-day Čiekurkalns.
