News from Riga Central Market

In the meat hall, food lovers can feast their eyes on eggs from those web-footed, quacking creatures (ducks and geese). Goose egg - €1 each. The aforementioned creatures are also available in chilled form. Two vendors were spotted facing each other, though the second had nearly sold out. Rabbit carcasses right next door.

Estonian eelpout and squid have appeared. Price €2.50 (presumably per piece). Smaller, less impressive squid are also available. Fresh trout roe has appeared as if from nowhere. I was so captivated by the sight that I may have looked at the prices too, but I don't remember now. A piece of salmon (Norwegian) for slicing onto bread is available in a price range of €15 to €18. Finnish farmed trout were also spotted.

The Iļģuciems beer counter has expanded its range with its own products - mostly beers with added flavours. Beet sugar in 2 kg packs at €1.79 is also available right there. Brālis, however, is no longer to be found. From the usual offerings the choice was limited and we ended up with Iļģuciems Extra Light at €4.40 for 2 litres. Labietis can be found in the vegetable hall, with an empty Beer Stall standing next to it - whether recently vacated or newly so.

A previously unseen cheese stall has appeared, stocking all manner of unheard-of cheeses - look for it in one of the corners of the vegetable hall. If you have a taste for raisins, it's worth a look at the Uzbek stall. Homemakers should note that the raisins there come on the stem, so before using them in any recipe some cleaning work will be required.

Outside it's bursting with strawberries. From goodness knows where they've sprung up. Price ~ €1.90 (for who knows what quantity - probably 100 grams).
