Ultra Violet - This Year's Colour
Pantone codes are a familiar thing for anyone who works with graphic design programmes, draws layouts, illustrations, or processes images. Likewise, every self-respecting company - or at least its marketing specialist - knows the corporate Pantone codes by heart. Until now I had not been following these official Colors of the Year, but had been guided by the principle of "like-dislike", "goes together-doesn't go together", "readable-not readable". But it's never too late to learn something new, is it?
Since 2000, the Pantone Color Institute has been regularly announcing a special "Color of the Year". Twice a year the company holds a secret meeting in one of Europe's capital cities, attended by colour standards groups from various countries. After two days of presentations and debates, they choose the colour for the following year.
For example, in the spring of 2012 in London, the summer 2013 colour was chosen - Emerald (Pantone 17-5641, #009473). The results of the meeting are published in the Pantone View book, used by fashion designers, florists, and many other design-creating companies to plan and develop fashion products for upcoming seasons. For example, the "PANTONEVIEW home + interiors 2018 Book" can currently be purchased on the company's website for 345 US dollars.
So the 2018 Color of the Year according to the Pantone Color Institute is PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet. They justify this choice with the following associations - dreams, provocation, the future in space, the endless nocturnal skies above us promising boundless discoveries, imagination and creativity have no limits. Music icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought Ultra Violet tones to the forefront of Western pop culture as an expression of individuality. The colour violet carries an aura of mysticism and higher revelation. It is used in spiritual practice spaces and meditation rooms.
I wouldn't say it's one of my favourite colours, but some combinations are quite interesting. If you're trying to follow fashion, then this spring add #5F4B8B to your wardrobe ;)
