The White Home
The colour white harmonises beautifully with other colours, it is a good base for other colours, and against it other colours - and forms - can stand out well. White demands space. It contains space within itself, can make ceilings look visually higher and room walls wider.
I know for certain that if I were to furnish a home from scratch again, I would take the white home concept as my foundation. If for no other reason than that white harmonises beautifully with other colours, it is a good base for other colours, and against it other colours - and forms - can stand out well. White is a neutral colour; it does not compete with others, so it can be combined with both warm and cold colours.

In the past I found it boring and even lifeless. It is associated with the absolute, with the beginning and end of everything. Not for nothing does white contain the full spectrum of all other colours. White is used in the rituals of baptism, weddings, and funerals - at every milestone in a person's life. That is why it always seems too formal, too distant, and something to be protected from touches, stains, and creases.

In fact, white cannot be either cold or warm. But I dislike the greyness of winter days as it reflects in white snow. A white space can be made warm by sunlight, yellow flowers in a vase, or orange, brown, or natural wood tones in the details.

Can white be modern? That is perhaps like asking whether classic can be contemporary? And yet, it seems that white brings a certain vintage atmosphere to a space and calls for decorations, linen fabric, rough-textured covers, furniture with a distressed effect, and natural materials.

But, without question: sophistication, clean forms, and attention to detail.
