Easter Greeting Verses

The day has equalled the night - the turning of the sun. After 40 days of the Great Lent, the Great Day has arrived. After a longer time of restraint, modesty and quiet, now splendour, bustle and the joy of life pour over the brim. As at other celebrations, so too at Easter let us dedicate good, bright, strong and joy-filled words to one another!

The day has equalled the night - the turning of the sun. After 40 days of the Great Lent, the Great Day has arrived. After a longer time of restraint, modesty and quiet, now splendour, bustle and the joy of life pour over the brim. Some mark the celebration of Christ's resurrection, others the victory of light over darkness, still others simply give themselves over to the celebration of life.

Easter in Latvia always falls between 22 March and 25 April. Respectively this year 2011 Easter falls on 24 April, in 2012 - 8 April, in 2013 - 31 March, in 2014 - 20 April, in 2015 - 5 April, in 2016 - 27 March, in 2017 - 16 April, etc.

These are truly celebrations of life. A person white and round like a pussy willow bud, healthy in both spirit and body. The circle as a symbol of fertility and the sun, for without sunlight there is no life, without inner light there is no full life.

As at other celebrations, so too at Easter let us dedicate good, bright, strong and joy-filled words to one another! Below I gather verses from my greeting verse notebook.

***

From wood anemones, pussy willows and grasses,
From birch buds this time is woven,
What Easter has brought in its palms,
Inviting us both to rejoice and to love,
And to express love ourselves.

***

May this white Great Day
Be as round as an egg,
May you have the pointed end through the day
And by evening may your voice not be lost.

***

The lark weaves a nest from sunbeams,
And the dawn lapwing weaves close to her nest.
The hares have started in the evenings
To dye eggs and store them in their baskets.

Along tiny roots, along bare fields
Easter comes wishing to stand as godmother
To that joy which sits on swings like a rooster,
To that joy which has been stored all year.

Easter comes with the long-awaited message,
Which bids one raise one's eyes to heaven,
Which calls one to plant the joy of a sprout in the soul
And to draw the golden sun from willow trees.

***

From the earth pushes a small flower
Great in its spite of frost.
It grasps the scarce rays of sun
Wanting to bloom on an Easter morning!

***

Let us keep the Easter sun in our hearts,
Let us keep the Easter joy always,
May the darkness that torments souls fade away.
May the Easter sun shine always!
