Greeting Cards - Warmth in the Letterbox

Despite today's advanced technological world, I believe that Christmas cards in particular must be tangible and definitely handwritten (rather than printed or e-cards). Then these greetings seem to retain the warmth and tenderness of the hands that the writer puts into the few words, or even the rather standardised greeting phrases. And so, the Winter Solstice is approaching again, and by our family's traditions the great greeting card writing season has arrived. The right moment to get in touch, to wish well to old acquaintances, distant friends, relatives, close and dear people, former and current colleagues, and so on.

Since this honourable duty is entrusted to me unanimously - that is, by a majority of one vote - I set about the task. And I have nothing against it, for I write, stick on stamps and look up addresses with enthusiasm, because it is precisely in this pre-holiday bustle that one feels the true joy of what is to come. I have even over the years put together a notebook with lists of those to be greeted, addresses, and verses.

The time of waiting for Christmas is also a time of giving and receiving bright thoughts and words. I think everyone peeks into their letterbox with childlike curiosity during the pre-holiday weeks and waits, waits... for a little envelope with a greeting card.
