On 11 October this year at 17:00 at the Great Guild, the world's foremost pioneer of Nouveau Flamenco, guitarist and composer Ottmar Liebert, will perform.
Liebert's unrivalled musical achievements often seem self-evident, given his cultural background and inexhaustible love of travel. Born in 1959 in Cologne, Germany, into a multinational family - his father German-Chinese, his mother Hungarian - the boy began playing guitar at age 11. Travelling intensively across both Europe and Asia, Ottmar absorbed the traditions of every musical style he encountered along the way.
In early youth Ottmar fulfilled his rock-and-roll dream in his native Germany, then in Boston, and eventually settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. There he founded his band, which he called the embodiment of his soul - Luna Negra (1989) - launching an entirely new musical style, Nouveau Flamenco, in which flamenco, jazz, bossa nova, Hindu meditation, and other musical traditions are blended. Within a short time his music moved from the shelves of art galleries to the tops of radio charts. Since 1990 he has released 25 albums, each one better than the last. Liebert has 38 gold and platinum albums in the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as 5 Grammy nominations, and has collaborated with world-class artists such as Celine Dion and Diana Ross.
The guitarist enjoys performing both solo and with Luna Negra. He will be in Latvia with a solo concert, delighting us with his finest compositions in the programme: An Evening with Ottmar Liebert: Guitar and Conversation.
Ottmar is a very gifted artist who shares his everyday and philosophical reflections on the world and its essence in a journal on his website - www.ottmarliebert.com - and also publishes his photographs, in which a great talent for noticing beauty in the everyday is immediately apparent. During his spiritual journey, a couple of years ago he was ordained as a Zen monk.
