Riga a Few Hours Before the New Year

Yesterday - that is, last year - we wandered around central Riga literally a few hours before the New Year, to enjoy the decorative lighting worth 480 thousand lats, so praised in the media. Beautiful!

Yesterday - that is, last year - we wandered around central Riga literally a few hours before the New Year, to enjoy the decorative lighting worth 480 thousand lats, so praised in the media. Beautiful! Strings of fairy lights in tree branches, above the streets, on bridges and beneath them too, decorated fir trees, enormous snowmen, markets in the old town squares, the aroma of mulled wine (although the hot balsam drink tasted rather nice too), and a full moon in the sky. The most visitors seemed to gather in Vērmanes Garden with its richly illuminated trees, and Opera Square with its colourful festive scenes projected onto the facade of the Opera House.
