On Saturday, 17 May in Sarkandaugava, almost all day and night from 11:00 to 24:00, there will be an extensive programme of events allowing visitors to discover Riga's oldest industrial neighbourhood (tours of RER, the Riga Psychiatry and Narcology Centre, Aldaris brewery and more), enjoy Latvian cinema at the former Aurora cinema, and take part in a riverside picnic.
As it turned out, the Twitter community took to this bit of fun - or Twitter flashmob - quite eagerly, resulting in the creation of several hundred altered movie titles. Some witty, some funny, some not so amusing.
My appointment fell on the evening of the last day of March. I went to my first RigaBrain trial training session. Measuring devices (sensors) were attached to both ears and on each side of the head. Then relaxing music was put on (the first piece in a Deep Forest style), alternating with more rhythmic or more peaceful tracks. The flow of music was interrupted every now and then by clicks or pauses, which were supposedly produced by my own brain.
On a full-moon Saturday, at midday on 1 March, we headed to Brīvības Avenue to take part in a RigaBrain introductory event. There were 14 of us in attendance. After the talk, Pēteris took us to the adjoining room where the sessions take place. He showed us the chair, the sensors, the computer he works with, and assured us there was nothing unusual about any of it.
Just as with statistics, it seems one can also apply to the media the saying that there are lies, damned lies, and media. Although a piece of news is in itself a reflection of an event, the path by which this news reaches the reader's or listener's field of view can be ambiguous.
We deliberately chose five days of rest in Palanga before the summer season started, to avoid the large tourist crowds and spend time in a tranquil mood. The pedestrian street - J. Basanavičiaus gatve - was still adorned with large decorative eggs. One of them was entirely covered with small pieces of amber. Bear in mind that the town is fairly small and oriented primarily towards tourism.
Today, 1 May at 15:00, several environmental design and improvement features were unveiled in Alekša Square in Sarkandaugava. The square is now dressed in red and features board game areas, a ping-pong table, bicycle parking, benches, and an outdoor exercise area. A place for walks, relaxation, and sporting activities.
Not going unnoticed is the increasingly frequent news about plans to raise fines for various traffic violations, including speeding. A fine must be fair, proportionate and, most importantly, equal for everyone. But... fines vary from country to country, just as average wages do.
The origins of the Easter Bunny (formerly a rabbit) are thought to lie in ancient Germanic traditions and beliefs about the spring equinox. The legend of the Easter Bunny was first documented in Europe as early as the 16th century, though no specific source is known. The place where Easter Bunnies were found in greatest abundance is the German city of Munich, where a Museum of Easter Bunnies was founded in their honour in 1991.
In Soviet times, this day was marked as Cosmonautics Day, because on 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin, launching aboard the spacecraft Vostok-1, became the first human to travel in space. In the Western world this day is known as Yuri's Night.
